How Your Diet Can Impact Your Mood

How Your Diet Can Impact Your Mood

How Diet Can Impact Mood

I bet you never thought that every time you stuff those greasy, salty McDonald’s fries down your throat you’re also doing potential damage to your mental state. There is a very huge relationship between mood and diet, and they are all linked together with mental health and emotional eating.

There are many ways your mental health could be affected by the food you eat. Your diet has a very big role to play in directing your mood. That is why you have to avoid the foods that get you moody and go with the ones that make you cheerful and happy.

Below are some of the links between diet, depression, stress and the mental health in general.

Your body will continue to seek for sugar to act as the fuel to jump start it and offer it instant energy. When you look at this, you will realize that it is the reason why many stressed people keep looking for sugary foods to eat. This damages their mental health. But when you imbibe the habit of choosing exercise or workout instead of snacks with sugar when you are stressed, it will help you become healthier mentally.

Again, you will be running the risk of suffering depression when you are exposed to unhealthy diet for a very long time. Now, after serious studies, changes in appetite were diagnosed as one of the causes of depression in people. When you eat an unhealthy diet, you are most likely going to experience some changes in appetite.

Sugar and addiction are also related. Nutrition researchers posit that there is a huge link between addictive eating and sugar. People who eat a lot of sugar suffer addiction to the sweet sugar, and whenever they need food, they will prefer their normal fatty and high sugar food. This damages their mental health further.

There also seems to be a link between Schizophrenia and blood sugar. Victims of Schizophrenia are mostly diabetic, and studies have previously linked the disease to sugar metabolism. Majority of the people with the sickness are normally diagnosed of high blood sugar or diabetes. So, you have to be careful of what you eat, so as not to affect your mental and emotional health and make you depressed and moody.

There is a practice known as emotional eating. It involves consuming food that is rich in sugar for the sole purpose of trying to escape a bad mood. For you to counter this, you should opt for mindful eating. This involves eating in a slow manner, and enjoying the entire eating exercise. This normally leads to less binging and therefore preserves your mood for you.

Our First Tip on the Blog!

Since this is the first tip on the blog, I am going to keep it short and simple.

Make sure to make time to play with your kids!

There is an old saying that idle hands do the devils work, and this is particularly true with young children. It is crucial to keep them occupied in constructive ways (don’t just plop them in front of the TV) so that they can not only stay stimulated, but remain in a controlled environment where you can keep an eye on what they’re doing.

One of the ways I was able to keep my two girls from destroying the house was setting up a room dedicated to crafts. We would paint, draw, and play with blocks and dolls. This would keep them occupied for hours and, due to some well-thought flooring choices, they could even make a mess with the paint!

It was their own little room where they could be “destructive” (throw paint around) in a constructive manner.

So, that’s it! Sorry it was so short! I’ll make a much longer post later on this week about breast pumping, so keep an eye out for that if that is a topic you want to learn more about!
